PSIPHON – SURFEN DURCH ANDERE FREUNDE

PSIPHON ist neben Retroshare Instant Messenger eines der effektivsten Mittel, um die Vorratsdatenspeicherung zu umgehen im Bereich E-Mails und Internetkommunikation.

Während Retroshare ja serverloses E-Mail ist, und daher das Einloggen in den eigenen E-Mailaccount oder die IP-Adressen einzelner E-Mails nicht gespeichert werden können, umgeht PSIPHON die Vorratsdatenspeicherung noch mehr: Man surft mit einer IP-Adresse ausserhalb der EU völlig unbeobachtet. Es ist also eine Proxy-Software wie Anonproxy oder Etlin Webproxy auch: Ein Freund in den USA oder jedenfalls außerhalb der EU (oder ein dort mit mehreren Freunden gemieteter Server) ermöglicht das Surfen mit einer nicht EU-IP-Adresse. Und somit ist die Vorratsdatenspeicherung hinfällig.

Der deutsche DSL-Zugangs-Provider sieht zwar die Verbindung zur der anderen PSIPHON-IP, aber sie ist über HTTPS sicher verschlüsselt und durchdringt dank des Ports 443 auch jede Firewall.

Somit kann also ein Chinese zu einem amerikanischen Freund verbinden und mit dessen Adresse ins unzensierte Internet gehen. Daher ist das Programm in China auch sehr populär – und wird es ggf. bald auch in der EU, um die Vorratsdatenspeicherung zu umgehen.

Das Programm wurde zunächst in Python geschrieben und geht auf das Programm "peekabooty" zurück, das seit einigen Jahren nun nicht mehr weiterentwickelt wurde (der Quellcode findet sich als historisches Backup auf der Amnesia-CD für Pyhton-Interessierte). PSIPHON ist nun das (inhaltliche) Folgeprogramm, das von ehemals Pyhton in C++ umgeschrieben worden und inzwischen sehr ausgereift ist.

Die Software hat den Vorteil, dass es den Nutzer einen Account einrichten kann mit Passwort und Zugangsnamen. Derjenige, der im Ausland sein PSIPHON zum Surfen zur Verfügung stellt, kann auch jede Webseite, die von anderen angesurft wird, in der Log-Datei sehen. Anonymes Surfen wie beim XERO-Browser (Tor) ist es also nicht, aber wenn es ein guter, vertrauter Freund in den USA ist, dann kann er ja auch ruhig sehen, welche Seiten zu abrufst. Auch Retroshare plant laut Forum, einen ähnlichen Dienst in die Messenger Freundesliste einzubauen, so dass man durch einen Freund im Ausland surfen kann und nicht seine eigene IP-Adresse nutzen muss.

Psiphon is a web proxy designed to help Internet users affected by Internet censorship securely bypass content-filtering systems setup by governments such as China, Iran, North Korea, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and others. Psiphon was developed by the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, building upon previous generations of web proxy software systems. Psiphon is an internet proxy, described as a censorship circumvention solution that allows users to access blocked sites in countries where the Internet is censored. The psiphon software turns a regular home computer into a personal, encrypted server capable of retrieving and displaying web pages anywhere. Psiphon was originally implemented in Python (see as well peekaboots software in python on this CD backuped), but has been re-designed and re-written in C++, and designed as a cross-platform (Windows and GNU/Linux versions are currently available), user friendly proxy server tool which uses a https protocol to transfer data. With a user name and password, people in countries that use Internet content filtering can send encrypted requests for information to a trusted computer located in another country and receive encrypted information in return. As https protocol is widely used for secure communication over the Internet (from web mail to Internet banking), no government can block https traffic without further restricting its citizens' ability to use the web, something that has not dissuaded these governments' Internet censorship efforts thus far. According to Nart Villeneuve, Director of Technical Research from the Citizen Lab, the idea is to get users to install this on their computer, and then deliver the location of that circumventor, to people in filtered countries by the means they know to be the most secure. What they're trying to build is a network of trust among people who know each other, rather than a large tech network that people can just tap into. Psiphon takes a substantially different approach to censorship circumvention than other tools used for such purposes, such as The Onion Router aka Tor. Psiphon requires no download on the client side, and thus offers ease-of-use for the end user. But unlike Tor, psiphon is not an anonymizer, as the server logs all of the clients surfing history – but not in the ISP, only at the trusted friend.
